چکیده

Background The Pennes' perfusion term in the Pennes bioheat transfer equation (BHTE) depicts the rate at which blood flow removes heat from a point and can play an important role in tissue heat dissipation. Because tissue perfusion is known to change over the course of a thermal therapy treatment [1, 2], the ability to perform multiple flow assessments to detect perfusion changes during magnetic resonance-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MRgHIFU) treatment is of high importance. In this work, we present a method to use arterial spin labeling (ASL) to determine the Pennes' perfusion term in brain tissue and evaluate performance as a function of various imaging parameters, such as flip angle (FA), bandwidth (BW), and resolution. The results indicate that the proposed technique could be applied in MRgHIFU to provide an efficient estimate of the Pennes' perfusion term. Although demonstrated on brain tissue, this technique could be applied to other tissue types.

Whole brain cerebral flow territory mapping using vessel selective dynamic arterial spin labeling within 30 seconds

Purpose: Territory information is important in patients with large vessel disease, e.g. in acute stroke patients, to identify the source artery of emboli. A standard whole brain territory mapping sequence using vessel selective arterial spin labeling (VS-ASL) takes about 5 minutes, which is frequently considered too long for addition to clinical protocols. This long scan duration is caused by t...

Continuous arterial spin labeling using a train of adiabatic inversion pulses.

PURPOSE To develop a simple and robust magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) pulse sequence for the quantitative measurement of blood flow in the brain and cerebral tumors that has practical implementation advantages over currently used continuous arterial spin labeling (CASL) schemes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Presented here is a single-coil protocol that uses a train of hyperbolic secant inversion p...

Continuous Arterial Spin Labeling by a Separate Neck Coil with Inversion-Recovery Suppression of Static Tissue Signals (ir- cASL)

INTRODUCTION Arterial spin labeling (ASL) technique has been widely used to measure cerebral blood flow (CBF) in animals and humans. This approach uses “pair-wise” subtraction of alternate images taken with labeled and non-labeled conditions to obtain a difference signal that arises only from inflowing “labeling” water. Although the static tissue signal from static brain water is subtracted out...

Selective arterial spin labeling (SASL): perfusion territory mapping of selected feeding arteries tagged using two-dimensional radiofrequency pulses.

To date, most perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods using arterial spin labeling (ASL) have employed slab-selective inversion pulses or continuous labeling within a plane in order to obtain maps derived from all major blood vessels entering the brain. However, there is great potential for gaining additional information on the territories perfused by the major vessels if individual ...

Assessment of myocardial blood flow (MBF) in humans using arterial spin labeling (ASL): feasibility and noise analysis.

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is a powerful tool for the quantitative measurement of tissue blood flow, and has been extensively applied to the brain, lungs, and kidneys. ASL has been recently applied to myocardial blood flow (MBF) measurement in small animals; however, its use in humans is limited by inadequate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) efficiency and timing restrictions related to cardiac mo...
